Man charged with murder in connection to Long Beach hit-and-run

LONG BEACH, CA – Jyvanta West, 26, was charged with murder, along with several other counts after he fatally struck Jose Hernandez and his dog then fled the scene.

The suspect, who led Long Beach Police police on a 5-minute pursuit after fleeing the scene of a burglary ran a red light and hit Hernandez while he was waking his dog last Tuesday night, according to The Long Beach Post.

West is being charged with one count of murder, fleeing a pursuing peace officer, second-degree burglary, animal cruelty, and the unlicensed sale/transport of marijuana.

His arraignment will be held on June 12th. If West is found guilty, his charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
