LOS ANGELES, CA – Two cars collided Tuesday afternoon sending seven people to the hospital, reports KTLA 5 News.
Reports came in around 1:00 p.m. of a crash near 77th Street and Fremont High School. A Mazda hatchback and Chevrolet Trailblazer collided, trapping the occupants of the Trailblazer. The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to extricate children and the driver from the vehicle.
Five children and the driver were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries. Two of the children had critical injuries but officers were optimistic about their chances for survival. The driver of the Mazda was also taken to the hospital.
Officials believe that speed was a major factor in the incident. The early stages of the investigation suggest neither driver saw the other. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been involved.
The Los Angeles Police Department is working on the collision investigation and more information will be provided if it becomes available.
